Things To Do In Lisbon

Fado music is now UNESCO World Heritage

By tilh / 10th February, 2020 / Things To Do In Lisbon / No Comments

Fado, which means fate or destiny, is a genre of music, with origins in XIX century, but probably before, in Lisbon, Portugal. It sings about love, passion, lost and saudade! In 2011 it became a part of UNESCO World Heritage List.

There are many great Fado singers like Amália Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo, Mariza, Carminho, Ana Moura, Camané, and so many other!

You can hear Fado live in bars and restaurants is the Alfama, an old neighbourhood of Lisbon, every night. It’s totally different experience than listening it on record!

From our hostel it’s a 5 minute walk to the first restaurant with Fado.

Santo Antonio – Festas de Lisboa – Lisbon Party

By tilh / 10th February, 2020 / Things To Do In Lisbon / No Comments

Santo Antonio is the biggest party in Lisbon, in Portugal, and nowadays the parties last the whole month of June. During this month, the weather calls everybody to the streets of old-town Lisbon to be part of Festas de Lisboa.

There are grilled sardines, wine and music in every traditional neighbourhood, like Alfama, Mouraria, Graça, Bica and Madragoa. They are called arraial! You have to walk around and visit one of them! Try sardine on the bread, drink real sangria, smell a “manjerico”, an aromatic plant, and dance to the old Portuguese popular music!

The busiest night is the 12th of June, the whole Lisbon stops! There’s no traffic in the center of Lisbon, people from everywhere around come to the center and the party goes on until the morning next day! It’s like Carnaval in Brazil or like koninginnedag in The Netherlands! It’s an unique night in Lisbon!
